Starcraft merchandise hub

There are quite a few starcraft merchandise spinoffs out there and it can get confusing. There are some hubs on starcraft merchandise however to break them down into different categories.

Gaming focus: If you play starcraft 2 intensively or plan to get a gift or starcraft present for someone who does the bread and butter of the game would be in either an ergonomic starcraft 2 gaming mouse or a starcraft 2 razer gaming keyboard. Both of these are pricey but would make a good addition to any sc2 gamer’s arsenal!

There are also the more random stuff like gaming headsets.

And of course this would include the game if you’ve not purchased it yet! If you’re looking to get a friend into the game, amazon is selling it at a pretty cheap price these days. Far far from the initially rather steep price. Even the collectible edition has come down in price for some places, although it would have appreciated in others.

You could also try to obtain a pre-order copy of Heart of the Swarm for a friend, if you know they would like it and aren’t buying a collector’s edition if there is one.

Non Gaming Focus: There are also many other forms of collectibles to do with starcraft 2! These can be T-shirts which are pretty run of the mill spin offs, to things like mousepads which I guess could come under the gaming focus. If you’re not really into starcraft 2 t shirts then there are things like starcraft 2 books for those interested in the backstory.

If you’re looking for a christmas guide you can check this starcraft 2 christmas gifts guide out, maybe it’ll help in preparing presents for your friends!

Unbuyable Stuff: While not really beyond the reach of money, some of these things require a more personal touch. This usually involves things like soft toys or plushies of starcraft units like a probe or home made stuff like cakes shaped in a starting base. These kind of stuff usually won’t be available to you unless you know someone who can make them!

Then again, you could learn to do it yourself. Or check if the makers are willing to custom make and design one for you, at a price…

Starcraft Universe

And it looks like the World of Starcraft Story gets a happy ending according to game news site Kotaku!

After numerous attempts to take down the youtube video, as well as visits for lawyers, things have turned around for the taleneted creator of the mod.

He has obtained a job offer, or perhaps more objectively an invitation to apply for a job, as well as a guided tour down blizzard.

World of Starcraft will undergo a new name and become a collab with another modder, under the new but shiny “Starcraft Universe” tag.

For more details you can click the kotaku news link at the top!

World of Starcraft

World of Starcraft isn’t what you may think it is. No it isn’t project titan. Instead it is a mod created in Starcraft 2 that is a Starcraft version of World of Warcraft! Maybe it is best if you just head straight towards the trailer made for the game and see how well it does at replication the WoW feel!

Starcraft 2 Science

Recently there have been quite a bit of people blogging about the science that could conceivably go behind the scenes of Starcraft 2, here are some of them:

The above is an article from gamepro that digs into the scientific underpinnings of starcraft 2. It tries to bring some factual science to the world of terrans, zerg and protoss. Some choice extracts from that source:

In 2009, scientists learned that separate ant colonies in Japan, Europe, and South America were actually part of a massive global super-colony. This is theorized to have been accomplished by stowing away on human transport, and overthrowing native colonies. So even with a different type of hivemind, Zerg-like tendencies can still emerge.

Teleportation (of the Protoss)

In other words, teleportation doesn’t actually move anything. A particle is simply recreated in a different location. This allows you to measure a particle in one place, then send that information (by conventional means, telephone, radio waves etc.) to another place where it can be constructed. Ostensibly allowing for near light-speed travel.

Again some choice extracts from the site, the site has many other thought blowing articles too!

Creep: that purple, fibrous, living mat that extends from zerg “buildings”. Its ominous presence always tells you you are entering unsafe territory, unless of course you’re playing as zerg, in which case it says “welcome home”! But what exactly is it?

Obviously the creep is still pretty science fictional. I mean, it can grow in space! There are actually some real-world spores that can survive in space, but I think the whole “zerg don’t need spacesuits” issue needs to be tackled in a future post. But from now on, when you see creep, think “slime mold” and when you’re out in the woods and you see a slime mold, be glad you don’t have to watch out for zerglings!

Razer Switchblade

Razer has what could be a revolutionary new design to laptops. One that is entirely devoted to gaming. It seems to be the Apple Inc of the gaming line. Their mockup video showcased it playing Dota and World of Warcraft on the touch screen with a keyboard that has an interface which changes in the game. From their teaser video Starcraft 2 was also seen so it wouldn’t be too far-fetched an assumption to say that they have Starcraft 2 Gamers in mine with their Razer Switchblade ‘laptop’.

Zerg Cake

Topping off the line is the final starcraft species cake, the zerg cake!

Here the minerals look to be crystals, I wonder if they are edible! If they are they may be made from sugar?

Looks really authentic, I guess the future cakes won’t be of just the natural but of a raging battlefield…

Starcraft 2 Heart of the Swarm Ending leaked!

Spoiler Alert!

A video has apparently leaked showing a studio’s preparatory work on the ending sequence for the Sequel to Starcraft 2 Wings of Liberty. According to Kotaku, the video has the stamp of The Third Floor, who has Blizzard as one of their clients. Chances are this is the demo reel for the ending of the next expansion. It remains to be seen if Blizzard will shake up the ending considering that this has been leaked.

It has been pulled from Vimeo and Youtube, so Kotaku’s own video component might be the only way to view it at the moment. Don’t watch if you don’t want spoilers though! The following is a short synopsis in case Blizzard takes down the video too, don’t read it if you don’t want spoilers!

It shows a Kerrigan in zerg form (spoilers for wings of liberty) storming into Mengsk’s room and impaling Mengsk (Arcturus), who appears to have clone kerrigans to synthesize a psychic shockwave to lock down Kerrigan. Jim Raynor in his black space marine suit storms in and saves Kerrigan who proceeds to impale and presumably behead Arcturus Mengsk. Following this, Kerrigan gives free will to the swarm and leaves with them (the zerg) as per a promise with Jim Raynor and the screen fades out to plenty of mutalisks flying away on their own paths now.
