Hearthstone Gift Guide

So you are looking for a gift for someone who you knows loves to play hearthstone, but you are unsure how? With amazon, it is now a whole lot easier!

To celebrate hearthstone’s launch on android (and also amazon app store), Amazon has managed a tie up with blizzard using Amazon coins to purchase hearthstone in app purchases.

You will finally be able to get the Hearthstone player a present for the game!

If you are intending to gift a present, be it for Birthdays or for Christmas and other events, one way would be to buy Amazon Gift Cards as a present for them so they can purchase Amazon Coins for the Hearthstone deals using the steps here or here or this page itself!

Spend-Less-Get-More

(Using current promotion, note that this can change)

1) Using the gift card to buy Amazon Coins
E.g. a $70 Gift Card will be able to buy 10000 coins in the current promotion at time of writing

2) Use the 10000 coins to buy Hearthstone packs in the Amazon App Store Hearthstone App, you will then get a coinback of 1000

3) You can then use the coinback of 1000 to buy more packs!

The best part about amazon gift cards is that they are sent almost instantly and there is no need to wait for shipping at all. This allows you to gift those last minute presents effectively, especially for say Christmas when all the deliveries are overloaded.

It used to be an incredible promotion where you can get 144 packs for just $80, but they have since reduced the 20% off coins and 50% coin back to 30% off coins and 10% coinback. While it is by no means a bad deal, you can now only get about 87 packs for $70. Those who acted fast really managed to get an incredible deal! Maybe Amazon will change their mind and revert back to the old promotion.

Heart of the Swarm is coming out soon!

Now instead of just the normal edition and the collectors edition, they have an in between digital deluxe edition that has the digital DLCs of the collector’s edition (Quite similar to the way Guild Wars 2 went about it)

It looks like zerg gets the protoss carrier on land in the form of the swarm host

Boxer Intel ad with SNSD

Looks like this has been out a while but here it is:

This advertisment comes in 1080p with english subtitles, even though its for intel’s korean campaign to push its iseries processors. The actual part where Boxer comes in is really only at the 3:30 mark. You get to see some starcraft action with the classic SlayerS Boxer siege tanks.

There are english subtitles to guide us, but of course you would notice that she isn’t using a mouse at all. You can see intel is really taking out the big guns in their advertising campaign! And I guess Boxer is rolling in the endorsement money in the e-sports scene. Maybe one day the e-sports scene will be as big as golf or tennis. Yoona from SNSD is a singer like the Taiwanese Pro Gamer Linda Liao, but unlike Linda Liao is not a starcraft 2 gamer and is instead also a dancer in the korean girl group SNSD.

Starcraft merchandise hub

There are quite a few starcraft merchandise spinoffs out there and it can get confusing. There are some hubs on starcraft merchandise however to break them down into different categories.

Gaming focus: If you play starcraft 2 intensively or plan to get a gift or starcraft present for someone who does the bread and butter of the game would be in either an ergonomic starcraft 2 gaming mouse or a starcraft 2 razer gaming keyboard. Both of these are pricey but would make a good addition to any sc2 gamer’s arsenal!

There are also the more random stuff like gaming headsets.

And of course this would include the game if you’ve not purchased it yet! If you’re looking to get a friend into the game, amazon is selling it at a pretty cheap price these days. Far far from the initially rather steep price. Even the collectible edition has come down in price for some places, although it would have appreciated in others.

You could also try to obtain a pre-order copy of Heart of the Swarm for a friend, if you know they would like it and aren’t buying a collector’s edition if there is one.

Non Gaming Focus: There are also many other forms of collectibles to do with starcraft 2! These can be T-shirts which are pretty run of the mill spin offs, to things like mousepads which I guess could come under the gaming focus. If you’re not really into starcraft 2 t shirts then there are things like starcraft 2 books for those interested in the backstory.

If you’re looking for a christmas guide you can check this starcraft 2 christmas gifts guide out, maybe it’ll help in preparing presents for your friends!

Unbuyable Stuff: While not really beyond the reach of money, some of these things require a more personal touch. This usually involves things like soft toys or plushies of starcraft units like a probe or home made stuff like cakes shaped in a starting base. These kind of stuff usually won’t be available to you unless you know someone who can make them!

Then again, you could learn to do it yourself. Or check if the makers are willing to custom make and design one for you, at a price…

Starcraft 2 Science

Recently there have been quite a bit of people blogging about the science that could conceivably go behind the scenes of Starcraft 2, here are some of them:

http://www.gamepro.com/article/features/215926/the-real-science-of-starcraft-2/

The above is an article from gamepro that digs into the scientific underpinnings of starcraft 2. It tries to bring some factual science to the world of terrans, zerg and protoss. Some choice extracts from that source:

Overmind

In 2009, scientists learned that separate ant colonies in Japan, Europe, and South America were actually part of a massive global super-colony. This is theorized to have been accomplished by stowing away on human transport, and overthrowing native colonies. So even with a different type of hivemind, Zerg-like tendencies can still emerge.

Teleportation (of the Protoss)

In other words, teleportation doesn’t actually move anything. A particle is simply recreated in a different location. This allows you to measure a particle in one place, then send that information (by conventional means, telephone, radio waves etc.) to another place where it can be constructed. Ostensibly allowing for near light-speed travel.

http://starcraftscience.com/2010/07/23/what-is-zerg-creep-really/

Again some choice extracts from the site, the site has many other thought blowing articles too!

Creep: that purple, fibrous, living mat that extends from zerg “buildings”. Its ominous presence always tells you you are entering unsafe territory, unless of course you’re playing as zerg, in which case it says “welcome home”! But what exactly is it?

Obviously the creep is still pretty science fictional. I mean, it can grow in space! There are actually some real-world spores that can survive in space, but I think the whole “zerg don’t need spacesuits” issue needs to be tackled in a future post. But from now on, when you see creep, think “slime mold” and when you’re out in the woods and you see a slime mold, be glad you don’t have to watch out for zerglings!

Starcraft 2 Heart of the Swarm Ending leaked!

Spoiler Alert!

From http://kotaku.com/5709838/ending-leaked-for-starcraft-iis-next-chapter

A video has apparently leaked showing a studio’s preparatory work on the ending sequence for the Sequel to Starcraft 2 Wings of Liberty. According to Kotaku, the video has the stamp of The Third Floor, who has Blizzard as one of their clients. Chances are this is the demo reel for the ending of the next expansion. It remains to be seen if Blizzard will shake up the ending considering that this has been leaked.

It has been pulled from Vimeo and Youtube, so Kotaku’s own video component might be the only way to view it at the moment. Don’t watch if you don’t want spoilers though! The following is a short synopsis in case Blizzard takes down the video too, don’t read it if you don’t want spoilers!

Spoilers:
It shows a Kerrigan in zerg form (spoilers for wings of liberty) storming into Mengsk’s room and impaling Mengsk (Arcturus), who appears to have clone kerrigans to synthesize a psychic shockwave to lock down Kerrigan. Jim Raynor in his black space marine suit storms in and saves Kerrigan who proceeds to impale and presumably behead Arcturus Mengsk. Following this, Kerrigan gives free will to the swarm and leaves with them (the zerg) as per a promise with Jim Raynor and the screen fades out to plenty of mutalisks flying away on their own paths now.
